"Data-Driven Growing in Practice: How AI Helps Shaping Protected Horticulture" Webinar Organized by Pusat Studi Sistem Pengelolaan Sumber Daya Lahan, Faculty of Agriculture, Padjadjaran University

 

On January 8, 2026, I attended a webinar entitled "Data-Driven Growing in Practice: How AI Helps Shaping Protected Horticulture" organized by the Pusat Studi Sistem Pengelolaan Sumber Daya Lahan, Faculty of Agriculture, Padjadjaran University. The speakers were Mr. Teddy Prayoga from LetsGrow.com and Prof. Reginawanti Hindersah, who served as the moderator. 

This webinar enlightened me that data-driven growing, especially in protected horticulture within greenhouses, has already been developing at a rapid pace. We could learn from the implementation in the Netherlands, where Mr Teddy said that because it has a small geographical area compared to Indonesia, and the actors or companies have an openness to share knowledge and data with each other, the development of the greenhouse and data-driven growing has reached an advanced level.

Then, I finished listening to an audiobook entitled "Caffeine: How Caffeine Created the Modern World" by Michael Pollan several days ago which was very eye-opening in describing how "Caffeine" has shaped our world. Starting a Professional Journey as a Junior Agricultural Economist by Joining Perhimpunan Ekonomi Pertanian Indonesia (PERHEPI)

 

A professional journey as an Agricultural Economist is just started. Today, I just got and received a KTA (Kartu Tanda Anggota) or a Membership Card from Perhimpunan Ekonomi Pertanian Indonesia (PERHEPI) Perhimpunan Ekonomi Pertanian Indonesia (PERHEPI) or The Indonesian Society of Agricultural Economics (ISAE).

I just finished listening to an audiobook entitled "Think Like An Ecosystem - An Introduction to Permaculture, Water Systems, Soil Science and Landscape Design" by Amélie Des Plantes, narrated by Brian Pederson on Audible. 

One problem and question that I tried to find and dig more in my journey as a Junior Agricultural Economist was about "what is the best and most sustainable food system for our current conditions in this modern life?", and Permaculture is one of the answers, both practically and philosophically. Permaculture is described as "nothing new"; it is a return to nature's way of taking care of itself. After humans disrupted natural balances, permaculture offers a philosophy to repair the harm and restore equilibrium. 

"The Science of Scaling: Grow Your Business Bigger and Faster Than You Think Possible" by Dr. Benjamin Hardy and Blake Erickson, Narrated by Benjamin Hardy on Audible

 

As someone who is building a small business, or perhaps I could call it a small project, Dzikra Yuhasyra's eCommerce, do scaling the  business is a future direction of my intention. To dig more about it, I just finished listening to an audiobook entitled "The Science of Scaling: Grow Your Business Bigger and Faster Than You Think Possible" by Dr. Benjamin Hardy and Blake Erickson, narrated by Benjamin Hardy on Audible. 

The authors define the three elements of The Scaling Framework: "Frame", "Floor", and "Focus". Your "Frame" is what you see based on your goals; your "Floor" is what you filter out (defining what you don't do); and your "Focus" is the specific path and partners you choose to realize the goal. This structure addresses the common problem where businesses are diluted, overly complex, and lack clarity. The importance of "Impossible Goal and Time" also "Simplifying Our Focused System"  are the main lessons learned from this book.

On 17th December 2025, I attended Exabytes Digital Day (EDD) entitled "Digitalisasi Agribisnis: Peluang Besar UMKM di 2026" with Zahra Amalina (Founder Terindo Group PT. Tetra Jaya Plusindo, Miss Indonesia Jawa Barat 2016) and Rayndra Syahdan Mahmudin, S.ST., M.MA (Ketua Umum Duta Petani Milenial & CEO Cipta Visi Group) as the speakers. 

Both speakers gave the "Gen-Z approaches" about how to run an agribusiness in today's digital era. Ms Zahra emphasized that today's farmers and agripreneurs should have a presence in digital platforms, such as social media and website to attract and educate Gen-Z that agribusiness is the backbone of our food security, it should implement data-driven technology, and do field work with style, so it has high value and is suitable with the youngsters. 

"Economics: Making Sense of the Modern Economy, Third Edition" Audiobook Edited by Saugato Datta, Narrated by David Thorpe on Audible

 

As a Junior Agricultural Economist, learning Basic Economics Concepts, both macroeconomics and microeconomics, is a must. I just finished listening to an audiobook entitled "Economics: Making Sense of the Modern Economy, Third Edition" edited by Saugato Datta and narrated by David Thorpe on Audible. 

I got valuable insights about how the basic concepts of economics, both macroeconomics and microeconomics, played a role as a lens of analysis and structure to gain lessons learned on the Financial Crisis in 2008-2009 in the rich worlds and how it affected the emerging economies. It enriched my knowledge and perspective about how I use and analyze the macroeconomics and microeconomics of the world's economic conditions and phenomena. 

QGIS and Machine Learning Workshop Organized by LOGIS MAP: The Importance of Spatial Data and Analysis to Create a Sustainable Food System, Agricultural Production, and Ecological Landscape

 

Spatial Data and Analysis are crucial in agricultural production, land use, and Natural Resources Management. I just got a completion certificate on a QGIS workshop from LOGIS MAP LOGIS MAP entitled "QGIS Remote Sensing & Machine Learning for Land Use-Land Cover Analysis: Classification, Change Detection, and Future Projection".

"Strategi Induk Pembangunan Pertanian 2015-2045 Pertanian-Bioindustri Berkelanjutan: Solusi Pembangunan Indonesia Masa Depan": Let's Reflect and Recalibrate the Milestones of Our Agricultural and Bio-Industry Development!

I want to share to you guys a document entitled "Strategi Induk Pembangunan Pertanian 2015-2045 Pertanian-Bioindustri Berkelanjutan: Solusi Pembangunan Indonesia Masa Depan" written by the Indonesia's Ministry of Agriculture, and this document was special, it's because my bachelor major, Agricultural Engineering SITH ITB, was held a discussion back then in 2015 about how this document would help Indonesia to become a prosperous nation based on its Agricultural and Bio-Industry Development, and one of the writers of this document was my lecturer at SITH ITB, Prof. Robert Manurung. 

After ten years from its publication, it's time to reflect and make an evaluation, how far is the synchronization of the policies from the government and the business condition from the farmers, business owners, and food actors in  these ten years of this document's implementation? How far is the real achievement in the grassroot fields and the macro-environments? Has our country achieved the sustainability of its agricultural and bio-industry development? So, let's reflect and recalibrate the Milestones of Our Agricultural and Bio-Industry Development by reading and recalling this document again. You could read the document below.

"Measuring and Transforming Indonesia’s Agrifood System: From Rice Dependence to Diversified Growth" Working Paper by LPEM FEB UI

 

Executive Summary

Indonesia’s agrifood system (AFS) has undergone a profound transformation over the past two decades, shaped by structural shifts in production, consumption, and policy. This paper analyzes the evolving structure and growth dynamics of Indonesia’s AFS using Input–Output data and comparative evidence from Bangladesh, Nigeria, and India. Three findings stand out. First, while rice remains politically central, its economic role has stagnated, leaving Indonesia caught in a “rice trap” of high prices, smallholder inefficiency, and heavy fiscal subsidies. Second, emerging drivers of dynamism—plantation crops, livestock, and dairy—demonstrate the growing importance of diversification, private sector investment, and off-farm value chains. Third, the Covid-19 shock revealed both resilience (in maize, roots, palm oil, and processed foods) and vulnerabilities (in rice, livestock, and imports of soybeans and dairy). The analysis shows that Indonesia’s future food security and rural prosperity depend on breaking free from the rice trap, rebalancing subsidies toward high-value crops and off-farm employment, and investing in infrastructure, cold chains, and institutional coordination. The paper concludes by outlining a research agenda for constructing an Indonesia-specific Agrifood System Social Accounting Matrix (AFS-SAM) better to quantify linkages, employment multipliers, and policy trade-offs.

I just watched a recording of an online webinar entitled "Launch of the Digital Agriculture Roadmaps (DARs) Playbook and Lessons Learned" organized by The World Bank, The Gates Foundation, and Boston Consulting Group (BCG). 

I learned about how the DARs Playbook would have a role as a main reference for all countries around the world, especially the Developing Countries, to build their roadmaps on Digital Agriculture. I learned the lessons learned of the implementation in Ethiopia and also the future roadmaps in Kenya. I hope my beloved country, Indonesia, will follow the steps. A Beginner Machine Learning Course on Dicoding Indonesia Supported by IDCamp Scholarship

 

Alhamdulillah, on this blessed Friday, I have completed three Basic and Beginner-Level Classes on Dicoding Indonesia Dicoding Indonesia in AI Engineer Pathway, which consist of "Belajar Machine Learning untuk Pemula", "Memulai Pemograman dengan Python", and "Belajar Dasar AI" Classes.

Data Analytics and Data Science are fields that have a tremendous role in today's Big Data era, including in Agriculture, Natural Resources Management, and Economics. 

Last week I attended RevoU @revou_id Mini Course in Data Analytics to review and enrich my knowledge about its role and impact on today's job market in various fields, of course, Agricultural Economics is one of them. Because I couldn't afford the full-stack programs, this Mini Course gave me a glimpse of the newest advancements and trends in Data Analytics, both in terms of knowledge and career prospects.

Indonesia's Coconut Production Data in 2023/2024 Based on National Superior Plantation Statistics: A Google Looker Studio Mini Project

 

 

 

As a Junior and Aspiring Agricultural Economist, data visualization is a crucial component and it has an important role to deliver our analysis and result to our audiences. One of the tools to create an online data visualization is Google Looker Studio.

To dig more about the materials, I joined an online workshop organized by Ioda Academy @ioda_academy about "Dasar Analisis Data Menggunakan Google Looker Studio", and Alhamdulillah I gained the completion certificate. 

"Restoration Agriculture: Real-World Permaculture for Farmers" Audiobook by Mark Shepard, Narrated by Jonathan Todd Ross on Audible

I just finished listening an audiobook entitled "Restoration Agriculture: Real-World Permaculture for Farmers" by Mark Shepard and narrated by Jonathan Todd Ross. This book has changed my mindset and paradigm about how to make a sustainable food system and production for all mankind and the mother earth. We have a wrong paradigm about annual monoculture production that is unsustainable and destroying the ecosystem. We should change it by creating an integrated perennial polyculture production system based on the local biome of the region. 

I want to make a headline about one of Shepard's views about the "myth of profitable agriculture," and noting that most farmers rely on off-farm income. He argues that the economic system is rigged against producers, and farmers should not beat themselves up for not being rich. The key to viability is lowering the cost of production. Restoration agriculture achieves this by eliminating inputs (fertilizers, sprays) and planting perennials only once. Once established, the input costs approach zero. 

Yoso Farm Homestead: An Example of Sustainable Small-Scale Integrated Farming System (Composts, Crops, Black Soldier Fly Maggots, Catfishes, Chickens) at House Backyard

 

Yesterday I attended an Integrated Farming Workshop organized by KelasBertumbuh where the speaker was  Ibu Nurul Fitri Hidayati, the owner of Yoso Farm Homestead, a small-scale and house backyard integrated farming system which is consist of Composts Production, Crops/Leafy Vegetables, Black Soldier Fly Maggots, Catfishes, and Chickens. It reminds me about my final undergraduate thesis which implemented the circular agriculture and the concept of integrated farming. Kudos my Agricultural Engineering SITH ITB fellas! 

My next goal is to make a plan to build and construct a small-scale integrated farming at my house backyard. Hope to make it real soon and "no wacana!" Haha.. One of the solution to solve the garbage/trash problem, avoiding environmental issue related to logistic pollution, carbon footprint, and greenhouse gas emission, and create a sustainable local food system is by making a sustainable small-scale integrated farming at house backyard.

I want to share an article by Prof Bayu Krisnamurthi Bayu Krisnamurthi entitled "Kesejahteraan Petani dan APBN 2026" that talked about "Indeks Kesejahteraan Petani (IKP)" as a new indicator and measurement of farmers' welfare and prosperity which will be included in R-APBN 2026.

 

It's such a progress to establish a more advanced tool to measure the prosperity level of our farmers! Let's monitor together the implementation of this indicator and see how it will affect and help our small-holder farmers' prosperity status to be increased!

I just finished listening to an audiobook entitled "Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Practice and Principles" by Peter F. Drucker and narrated by Michael Wells on Audible. I learned that innovation and entrepreneurship are purposeful practices, principles, and disciplines capable of being learned. Drucker said that entrepreneurship is neither a science nor an art, but a practice with a knowledge base that acts as a means to an end, and we should create and build a managerial and entrepreneurial economy with the entrepreneurial society as a result and goal. On the course, I learned about Correlation Analysis with STATA, Advanced Comparative Analysis with STATA, Comparative Analysis with STATA, Descriptive and Inferential Analysis with STATA, Basic Introduction to Using STATA, and STATA Apperception. It increased my competency in research tool which widely uses in Economics and Public Policy Field.

This morning I joined a Joint Seminar entitled "Penguatan Rantai Nilai Agribisnis untuk Mewujudkan Sistem Pangan yang Berkelanjutan" organized by Departemen Agribisnis, Fakultas Ekonomi dan Manajemen IPB and  Prodi Agribisnis, Departemen Sosial Ekonomi Pertanian, Fakultas Pertanian, Universitas Padjadjaran. This seminar concluded that value chain is the core of sustainable food systems and we should implement territorial approach, so the sustainable food systems will be achieved region by region with the local food hubs that should play their crucial roles.
